CARDIAC Happy Valentine’s Day
Happy Valentine’s Day! On this love- and heart-focused day, we want to highlight the KDH Research & Communication-developed program CARDIAC, or Cardiac Rare Disease and Conditions. CARDIAC is designed to address the gap of information about Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) among general cardiologists and non-cardiologist providers in Georgia and Louisiana.
ATTR-CM, a sub-type of amyloidosis, causes ventricles of the heart to thicken, which results in the inability of the heart to function properly, and eventually leads to heart failure. This rare heart condition has a higher prevalence among African American men in the United States and is notoriously hard to diagnose.
CARDIAC aimed to 1) increase provider knowledge about and self-efficacy to identify signs and symptoms of ATTR-CM and 2) increase provider access to ATTR-CM training. At the end of the CARDIAC program, providers were able to appropriately diagnose ATTR-CM, which can lead to early treatment of ATTR-CM.
