KDHRC Sponsors New Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital

Did you know that Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) is opening a new hospital in September 2024? The Arthur M. Blank Hospital, which will be located in North Druid Hills, will have 19 stories and more than 446 beds to further expand the excellent pediatric healthcare system known throughout Atlanta. The new hospital will have special family amenities like washers, dryers, and kitchenettes on every floor; more than 20 acres of greenspace visible from hospital rooms; and specially designed playgrounds and playrooms.

KDH Research and Communication has long supported CHOA and was thrilled to contribute to this special community campaign – we added an animal to their interactive CHOA virtual mural board! And of course we chose a squirrel to represent our commitment to their campaign.

CHOA’s mission is dear to KDHRC because supporting the health and well-being of children in our communities is a key component of our own. Specifically, KDHRC programs that support children with chronic illnesses and developmental disabilities include:

• Project PENCIL: a toolkit to support parents and teachers of children with chronic illnesses. Evaluation of Project PENCIL determined that parents who used the Project PENCIL materials gained knowledge about educational services available to chronically ill students and felt more positive about working with the school to support their children.
• Puentes: a six-module online course to train promotores (community health workers) to empower Latino parents of children with special health care needs to navigate the health care and school systems and secure educational accommodations. After Puentes, promotores had higher knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to conduct outreach compared to before the training.
• Cochlear Implant School Toolkit: training materials to help teachers and parents support children with cochlear implants in mainstream classrooms. Teachers who were exposed to the teacher’s materials in this toolkit had an increase in knowledge to educate children with cochlear implants and rated the materials as very helpful.
