The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities funds KDHRC

October 2015 —

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities funds KDHRC to develop and evaluate a program to train promotores to conduct outreach to Latinas with suspected or diagnosed lupus

KDHRC will collaborate with the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) to develop Latinas con Lupus, Promotoras con Información (LLPI) as a culturally-tailored, online professional development course designed to provide promotoras de salud (promotoras) with knowledge and skills to conduct outreach to Latinas with diagnosed or suspected systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus).

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and affects the skin, joints, and multiple organ systems in the body, which disproportionately affects ethnic minority women, including low-income Latinas. There is no cure for lupus, however, adequate diagnosis and treatment improve health outcomes and quality of life. Research suggests Latinas may lack awareness about lupus, therefore, LLPI will train promotoras to conduct awareness-raising activities such as educational outreach in one-on-one discussions and community presentations.
